My recent work is focused on a contemporary interpretation of Kumiko, an ancient Japanese woodworking technique most commonly found on shoji screens and as a decorative element in traditional Japanese homes. In this piece the upper patterns on the doors are the Yae-Asanoha (hemp leaf), the lower patterns are Yae-Zakura (cherry blossom). The piece was completed in 2021. However, the vases were made almost exactly 50 years ago and are among the first things I ever made out of wood.
