A large piece of Texas Mesquite turned on a lathe then a feature of beading was cut in to the wood and divided with a pyrography burner. The design was colored with archival inks and acrylic paint. A design band was added below the dyed black rim. The natural color of Mesquite was brought out with multiple coats of penetrating tung oil.
