In Their Own Words

In Their Own Words, Division I Professional
In Their Own Words Div. I First place, Sculpture
'In Their Own Words' is a bas relief I sculpted based on a family in Papau New Guinea commemorating their village tribe receiving the bible in their own language, Mbore, five years ago. I filmed the work every night in September and October and uploaded the footage to the mission's marketing team. They used the footage of my sculpting process to raise funds for a new translation in Tenebra, an East Asian language. I donated three plaster casts for them to use for fundraising. I tried to capture their tribe's joy and pride in the accomplishment as they completed the work of the last 17 yrs with the translation team. Such a beautiful family! The grandmother was so thrilled that they had a written language and could now read. I researched Papau New Guinea's flora and fauna to make the background composition, as I only had one blurry photo to go on. I used 3-d models arranged in each family member's pose to help me 'sculpt from life'. I've always dreamed of going overseas myself as a missionary, which is why I was so eager to help.
