The challenge of Cresting Wave was twofold - making something that is inherently a curve using a technique that is inherently square and perfecting the color gradient of the wave.
I found it very satisfying to be able to represent something so fluid in the natural world with a format that has more in common with an engineering drawing. As for the color gradient – that was a labor of love. It was during the staining process that I started reflecting more deeply on color. I began to wonder if there was a way to get the colors I was making artificially in a natural way. Is there blue wood? Is there white wood? The answer is yes, and the results of my search dramatically altered the way I thought about including color in much of my later work
