Wood is my medium of choice and I wanted the beauty of what nature can produce to be a central focus of this sculpture, rather than just the means to represent my subject. So, in this work, no stain or other finish has been applied to the wood cubes or base. The colors and patterns are natural to each wood. I find the beauty of the wood to be the most compelling aspect of this piece. Additionally, much of the identity of my later work can be traced to this project.
I find much of my inspiration in nature, with this work drawing on time spent camping in Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks. I wanted to do something new with this sculpture, and I felt a canyon would be the perfect subject to experiment with. Instead of leaving the base as a hunk of wood, it allowed me to carve into the base, the way a river would carve a canyon. The beautiful hues of blue in the water and the dusty orange in the canyon walls are represented well in the natural buckeye burl and olive wood. The towering canyon walls gave me a place to experiment with using much straighter and sturdier glass rods, allowing me to remove the acrylic topper found in my previous works.
