The Expedition is the beginning of a story about wood. In a previous project, I happened to stumble across some exotic wood as I was researching natural wood colors. Upon seeing the beautiful colors of wood that trees were capable of naturally producing, I immediately began collecting samples and visiting all of the lumber yards I could find in Houston, looking for beautiful and colorful wood.
The story this piece tells is my expedition through the process of learning about and working with some of the massive variety of wood that is out there. In my search I was amazed by the colors of wood I found. As I worked with the diverse varieties, I learned each one has its own character and complexity. Some woods crack under heat while being sanded like buckeye burl, and some change colors with exposure to UV light like lignum vitae.
The colors, working complexities, and quirky attributes of each wood deepened my appreciation for the material, and I hope by displaying them that others get to enjoy the sense of wonder I felt when seeing these astounding woods for the first time.
